AWCS circle: Week 2- Root

Last Thursday's circle, the first one in the series, was truly a beautiful experience. I had the opportunity of sharing with some of the most amazing people I know, and begin our 10 week journey together through the book. We talked about many things, such as what we wish to learn together, the issues with the recycling industry, and the difficulties that may arise while working in the climate space.
This week's theme is "Root". Just like trees, we must ensure a strong rooting system in our advocacy and activism if we wish to reach the sky. Our efforts for transformation must be rooted in our communities and social justice, as well as Indigenous wisdom, if we are to truly transform rather than substitute one oppressive system for another. In her essay Sherri Mitchell says "In order to survive, we must all come to realize that we do not exist solely for the benefit and development of our individual lives as human beings. Rather, our role as human beings is to evolve into a state of interbeing with the rest of life so that we may join the universal flow that is ever moving toward harmony and balance."
This week we will be reading essays and poems by Xiye Bastida, Janine Benyus, Ellen Bass, Sherri Mitchell, Kate Marvel, Lynna Odel, adrienne marie brown, and Naomi Klein. If you would like to learn more from these passionate climate leaders, I have curated the supplementary material the AWCS team has shared with us, in what I believe is an ascending order of time requirement. El círculo del jueves pasado, el primero de la serie, fue realmente especial. Tuve la oportunidad de compartir con algunas de las personas más increíbles que conozco y comenzar nuestro viaje de 10 semanas juntos a través del libro. Hablamos de muchas cosas, como lo que queremos aprender juntos, los problemas con la industria del reciclaje, y las dificultades que pueden surgir al trabajar en el espacio climático.
El tema de esta semana es "Raíz". Al igual que los árboles, debemos asegurarnos de tener un fuerte sistema de raíces en nuestra defensa y activismo si queremos llegar al cielo. Nuestros esfuerzos para la transformación deben estar enraizados en nuestras comunidades y en la justicia social, así como en la sabiduría indígena, si queremos transformar verdaderamente en lugar de sustituir un sistema opresivo por otro. En su ensayo, Sherri Mitchell dice: "Para sobrevivir, todos debemos llegar a comprender que no existimos únicamente para el beneficio y el desarrollo de nuestras vidas individuales como seres humanos. Más bien, nuestro papel como seres humanos es evolucionar en un estado de interrelación con el resto de la vida para que podamos unirnos al flujo universal que siempre se mueve hacia la armonía y el equilibrio".
