AWCS circle: Week 1-Begin

Back in high school, I was taught never to begin an essay with "I". The more I learn about Climate Change, and listen to Indigenous Wisdom and the Climate community, and look at the state of the world, the more I think, maybe we should start teaching to never begin a conversation with "I". What would happen if we started avoiding putting ourselves at the forefront of a conversation?
Now that I have done as I was taught, let me tell you, I am so excited to begin our circles this Thursday! This week we'll start at the beginning. This week's chapter is a short introduction by the editors, giving us an idea of what we'll learn, share, and hold together through the coming ten weeks. I am so happy and grateful for those who were able to join this first circle, and their very varied experiences, which I hope will make for very interesting conversations!
In addition to this week's chapter, the AWCS team has shared a list of supplemental materials that we can all enjoy regardless of the place we find ourselves in our Climate journey. While they grouped the materials by their authors, I have grouped them by format, so that you can choose depending on your time availability and current commitment level.

PS: I had redacted this post before the events of January 6th. While it didn't surprise me that it happened, it was still shockingly horrific and a heartbreaking experience to witness it. As a white latina from Costa Rica, one of the most historically stable countries in Latin America, I have found myself in the privileged position my whole life of learning about similar events from history books, and never from experience. Now I have found myself directly affected by the violent attacks and the intolerant rhetoric of the oppressors at a time I find myself almost completely cut from my support system (if it wasn't for technology). I am filled with grief, and pain, and shock, and am working on processing these feelings, and holding space for them to avoid becoming overwhelmed and numb, and instead turn them into a flame that feeds the fire of my passion for working on making this a better society for ourselves, for our descendants and this planet that is our home.
Cuando estaba en el colegio, me enseñaron a no empezar nunca un ensayo con "yo". Entre más aprendo sobre el cambio climático, y escucho la sabiduría indígena y de la comunidad climática, y miro el estado del mundo, más pienso, tal vez deberíamos empezar a enseñar a no empezar nunca una conversación con "yo". ¿Qué pasaría si empezamos a evitar ponernos de prioridad en una conversación?
Ahora que he hecho lo que me enseñaron, déjenme decirles que estoy muy emocionada de comenzar nuestros círculos este jueves! Esta semana empezaremos por el principio. El capítulo de esta semana es una breve introducción de las editoras, dándonos una idea de lo que aprenderemos, compartiremos y sostendremos juntos durante las próximas diez semanas. Estoy tan feliz y agradecido por aquellos que pudieron unirse a este primer círculo, y por sus muy variadas experiencias, que espero que hagan para conversaciones muy interesantes!
Además del capítulo de esta semana, el equipo de AWCS ha compartido una lista de materiales complementarios que todos podemos disfrutar independientemente del lugar en el que nos encontremos en nuestro proceso climático. Mientras que han agrupado los materiales por sus autores, yo los he agrupado por formato, para que puedan elegir según su disponibilidad de tiempo y el nivel de compromiso actual.

PD: Había escrito este post antes de los eventos del 6 de enero. Aunque no me sorprendió que ocurriera, fue una experiencia horrible y desgarradora. Como una latina blanca de Costa Rica, uno de los países más estables históricamente en América Latina, me he encontrado en la posición privilegiada toda mi vida de aprender sobre eventos similares de los libros de historia, y nunca de experiencia. Ahora me he visto directamente afectada por los ataques violentos y la retórica intolerante de los opresores en un momento en que me encuentro casi completamente aislada de mi sistema de apoyo (si no fuera por la tecnología). Estoy llena de sufrimiento, y de dolor, y de shock, y estoy trabajando para procesar estos sentimientos, y sosteniendo el espacio para que no sentirme abrumada y entumecida, y en su lugar los convierta en una llama que alimente el fuego de mi pasión por trabajar para hacer de esta una sociedad mejor para nosotros, para nuestros descendientes y para este planeta que es nuestro hogar.
